Philip EllisSince winning first prize at the Leeds Conductors’ Competition in 1991, Philip Ellis has established a reputation as one of Great Britain’s most versatile conductors. In the UK he has conducted the The Philharmonia, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Hallé Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra including recordings for the BBC Masterprize Composition Competition; the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, BBC Concert Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra, London Mozart Players, English Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra of Opera North, City of London Sinfonia, and Northern Sinfonia. Following his début with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra in 1987 his work abroad has included the Hong Kong Philharmonic, Netherlands Radio Symphony, Belgian National Orchestra, Flanders Symphony Orchestra, St Petersburg Philharmonic, St Petersburg Symphony, Joensuu City Orchestra, Turin Opera Orchestra, National Orchestra of Mexico, Western Australian Symphony, Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. He has conducted the BRTN Philharmonic (Brussels) on many occasions for both radio and television and was a regular guest conductor in Germany with the Würtembergische Philharmonie Reutlingen and Neue Philharmonie Westfallen. A regular guest conductor for the Hallé Orchestra over seven seasons, conducting and introducing the majority of their concerts for Schools and Families, plus symphony concerts in their main seasons at the Bridgewater Hall and on tour. Associate Conductor for the English Sinfonia for nearly 20 years, conducting over 400 concerts in the Royal Festival Hall, Symphony Hall and regional smaller venues throughout the UK. As musical director and founder of the English Camerata he curated and conducted concert series' at the Queen Elizabeth Hall and St John's Smith Square for many years. For ballet performances he has conducted The Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Staatskapelle Dresden, Orchestra of La Scala Milan, Paris Opera Orchestra and Turin Opera Orchestra. He worked extensively with soprano Lesley Garrett as her Music Director for many years, in concerts and recording many CDs with her for BMG and EMI Classics as well as TV series’ for the BBC2 TV. He made his opera début conducting Tosca with Opera Holland Park and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 2004. He was Musical Director for National Theatre Production of Birtwistle’s Bow Down and Under the Greenwood Tree at the Queen Elizabeth Hall. He continues to work extensively with Amateur and Community Orchestras., particularly as Music Director of the West Forest Sinfonia.
